Episcia cupreata ‘Platinum’
Silver Elegance for the Indoor Jungle

If you're looking to add elegance, shimmer, and a tropical touch to your houseplant collection, Episcia cupreata ‘Platinum’ is ready to impress. This stunning cultivar of the Flame Violet family stands out with its luminous silver foliage, subtle veining, and soft texture. It’s a rare beauty that’s also surprisingly easy to grow—perfect for seasoned collectors and curious beginners alike.

Let’s explore everything that makes ‘Platinum’ so special, and how you can grow it into a breathtaking botanical masterpiece in your home.

What Makes ‘Platinum’ So Unique?

Unlike its brighter cousins with pinks, reds, and bronzes, Episcia ‘Platinum’ offers a cool, silver-toned palette that gleams under light. Its leaves are soft and velvety, with silvery-white centers and darker green edges, giving the plant a frosted appearance. Under the right conditions, it produces small, vivid red flowers that pop against the silvery foliage like little bursts of fire on snow.

Its beauty lies in the contrast—refined leaves and bold blooms, all packed into a compact, low-growing plant that loves warm, humid environments.

How to Grow and Care for Episcia ‘Platinum’

Let’s walk through the easy steps to help your plant thrive.

1. Light: Indirect and Bright

Place your Episcia ‘Platinum’ in bright, indirect sunlight. It needs good light to keep its silver color bold, but too much sun can burn the delicate leaves.

Perfect spots include:

  • Near an east-facing window

  • A few feet from a south or west window

  • Under LED grow lights

Too little light will dull its shine. Too much will crisp the leaves. Bright and balanced wins the day.

2. Watering: Moist but Never Wet

Think “even and gentle.” Episcia doesn’t like soggy roots or dry spells.

  • Check the top inch of soil—if it’s dry, it’s time to water.

  • Water until it just begins to drain from the pot’s bottom.

  • Never let the pot sit in standing water.

This plant thrives on consistency. If it dries out too much, it might droop or drop leaves.

3. Humidity: Loves It Lush

Native to tropical forests, this plant craves high humidity. Aim for 60–80%.

  • Use a humidifier

  • Place it on a pebble tray with water

  • Cluster it with other humidity-loving plants

Low humidity may cause crispy edges or faded leaves. High humidity keeps that silver shimmer strong and the leaves lush.

4. Temperature: Warm and Cozy

Episcia ‘Platinum’ likes steady, warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C–27°C). Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden shifts in climate.

Avoid:

  • A/C vents

  • Cold windows in winter

  • Sudden chills

If your home is comfy for you, it’s probably great for your Episcia, too.

5. Soil: Loose and Airy

Use a lightweight, well-draining soil mix. Here’s a good combo:

  • 2 parts coco coir or peat moss

  • 1 part perlite

  • 1 part orchid bark or African violet mix

The goal is to hold moisture without compacting, so roots get both air and hydration.

6. Fertilizing: Small Boosts, Big Impact

During the growing season (spring through early fall), feed your Episcia every 2–4 weeks with a half-strength liquid fertilizer.

Choose a formula made for:

  • African violets

  • Flowering houseplants

Avoid overfeeding. Too much fertilizer can dull the leaf color or burn the roots.

7. Propagation: Easy and Rewarding

Episcia ‘Platinum’ spreads through stolons—thin runners that send out baby plants.

Here’s how to propagate:

  1. Let a baby plant root in a nearby pot of moist soil while still attached.

  2. Once roots form and it begins to grow, clip the stolon.

  3. Voilà! A brand-new plant to enjoy or share.

It’s a fun way to multiply your collection and makes great gifts for friends.

Common Issues and Quick Fixes

Worried something’s wrong? Let’s troubleshoot together.

  • Leaves yellowing: Probably overwatered—check soil and drainage.

  • Leaf edges turning brown: Usually dry air—boost humidity.

  • Dull or faded leaves: Needs brighter light—but no direct sun.

  • Drooping plant: May be too dry, too cold, or too dark.

Catching problems early leads to quick recovery. This plant bounces back well with a little TLC.

Styling Ideas: Make the Most of the Silver Glow

Episcia ‘Platinum’ deserves to be seen. Try it in:

  • A hanging planter, where it can cascade

  • A decorative pot on a plant stand or shelf

  • A glass terrarium with airflow

  • A mix of plants with bold or dark foliage for contrast (like black-leaf begonias or maranta)

Its cool silver tones make it a great accent in warm, cozy rooms or minimalist plant displays.

Recap: Why You’ll Love ‘Platinum’

  • Unforgettable foliage: Silver with green framing—elegant and rare

  • Low and trailing growth: Easy to style and display

  • Dainty red flowers: Add a punch of tropical color

  • Low maintenance: Perfect for indoor growing with bright light and humidity

  • Propagates easily: Makes it fun and rewarding

With just a little care, Episcia cupreata ‘Platinum’ will reward you with show-stopping beauty year-round. Whether you’re creating a jungle corner or adding finesse to a tabletop, this plant brings a calming, cool presence to any room.

Let it grow. Let it shimmer. Let it remind you how beautiful nature can be—even in silver.

Finally, a ball that made it!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I don’t know what is it with this ball, but it’s special. My dogs can absolutely tear up anything and this one seems like it can be chewed up but my dog loves it too much. He carries it all day, nibbles it and loves the squeaky sound of course. Finally found a winner!

Good size ball for my big boy
Color: Purple
My big boy loves this ball. He chews and chews and chews on it and it ain't made a dent in it. It's made a good quality rubber. It's got a squeaker in it. He hasn't managed to get it out which is not normal because normally he can get a squeaky out within 10 minutes. He goes through toys like I don't know what so it's being being a good. Really good ball. We've had it for about 2-3 months now and he hasn't been able to break into it and get squeaky out or even make a dent into it. That would tear up the the rubber

Sturdy ball, holding up well.
Color: Purple
I have a ball obsessed Shih Tzu. This has become his security blanket. He literally takes it everywhere and even sleeps with it next to him. Dexter loves any ball. All shapes and sizes. He will play fetch all day long if you let him. He doesn't know when to quit. It can be 100 degrees out with 80% humidity and he'll fetch all day long. This is a larger ball, I think just over 3 inches. It is entirely too big for a Shih Tzu, but it is perfect for Dexter. He came to us with a ball similar to this that he has since lost. He carries it in his mouth by placing his incisors in the indentations and lets it hang out the side of his mouth. Quite comical actually, but it works for him. We have bought him balls more for his size, but they're too small and he gets them lost under cabinets, furniture or any nook and cranny the ball will fit. And being obsessive, he will bark and carry on because he can't get to the ball until you come and rescue it. Difficult on our old knees. So he ends up getting the smaller balls taken away from him. The other night he was laying and chewing on this ball. It sounded like he was shredding this ball to pieces. I was afraid he would choke or swallow the rubber pieces, so I took it away from him. There wasn't anything wrong with the ball. It looked brand new. No chew or bite marks that I could see. I was impressed. It does have a squeaker, but I can barely get it to squeak and I have strong hands. A larger dog with a stronger bite force could probably easily make it squeak. It claims to have a beef scent to the toy, and maybe that is why he likes the ball so much. But I sniffed it and couldn't smell anything, which is fine by me, it won't have an obnoxious smell to where I don't want it around me.

Dogs love balls
Color: Orange
Most dogs love to play with balls. This is a ball. It squeaks and can handle a lot of strong chewing. Quite durable and a good size for medium and up sized dogs. (Honestly even smaller dogs would have fun with this).
